Commercially, Kyla practices design under her studio moniker, Patio where she works with individuals and organizations to build visual identities that align to their values. As an Assistant Professor of Graphic Design at St. John’s University, Kyla encourages students to explore vernacular histories and socially responsive design outcomes. I recently redesigned it to be a little bit complicated and weird with my students in mind. Often times, we opt for minimal viable products. I see it first-hand when students based their work on Behance projects made by former students. Even for myself, inviting counterpoint and weird experiences into our process will lead to more interesting work. In 2010, while I was a design student at RISD, I designed the original logo for his patented beach umbrella sand anchor. Over the following decade, as I became a design educator, I continued to evolve the brand and manage its e-commerce presence by working with my students as design interns.
