I’m Kyla!
I’m a designer, researcher, and educator. Lately, I talk a lot about digital tools, urgent economies, and fun making—and whether all three play well together. I live in Brooklyn, New York, but I am from North Providence, Rhode Island. I cook a mean mushroom risotto.
I am an Assistant Professor of Graphic Design at St. John’s University where I encourage students to explore vernacular histories and socially responsive outcomes. My current research focuses on cultural literacy of designed systems and the tension between meaningful creation and algorithmic optimization.
Commercially, I practice design under my studio moniker, Patio, working with purpose-driven organizations across tech, climate, and education to develop brand systems that answer to both timelessness and trend.
